Academic Coaching is a service available to all on-campus SIU students. Academic Coaching consists of weekly one-hour, individualized sessions in which the Academic Coach assists the student with a variety of academic skills and techniques:
- Review course subject matter and syllabi.
- Practice study skills, such as note-taking, vocabulary, problem-solving, organization, task management, and time management.
- Apply learning strategies and test-taking strategies to become active and independent learners.
- Create goals and study checklists to improve academic performance.
Academic coaching appointments will take place in Morris Library, room 710. If you would like to request a virtual appointment, please do so in the comment section of the request form or email tutoring@siu.edu after submitting your request online.
Drop-In Academic Coaching
This service can be used to answer questions about time management, test-taking strategies, and all other academic success questions. For more in-depth questions and tips, please request an academic for a weekly session.

What is Academic Coaching?
Academic Coaching assists the student with a variety of academic skills and techniques. Coaches provide students with academic support in areas that include but are not limited to organization, time management, test-taking strategies, and goal setting.
What are the benefits of Academic Coaching?
Academic Coaches work with students individually, assess their strengths and needs, identify additional academic and personal resources, and develop an individualized plan of action for academic success.
How much does Academic Coaching cost?
Academic Coaching is free to all undergraduate students who are currently registered at Southern Illinois University.
Who will be my Academic Coach?
Academic Coaches are undergraduate students who are trained in providing techniques and strategies to utilize in each session.
How do students request an Academic Coach?
Students can complete a request in person at the Tutoring Center in Morris Library, 7th floor, or online on the Academic Coaching page. All coaching sessions are held in Morris Library 7th floor Room 710 (Tutoring Center).
Am I guaranteed an Academic Coach?
We cannot guarantee all students requesting assistance will be connected to an Academic Coach. Connection depends on the availability of the Academic Coach and schedule compatibility between the student and the Academic Coach.
Is Academic Coaching available during the summer?
No, Academic Coaching is offered during the fall/spring semester. During the summer, the Tutoring Center is closed.
How should a student prepare for the first Academic Coaching session?
Students should ask questions related to the Academic Coaching process, share expectations and outcomes, and share changes they would like to see happen during the Academic Coaching experience.
When a student is unable to keep a scheduled appointment, what should they do?
Contact Academic Coach directly or contact the Tutoring Center, at 618-453-3387 or e-mail tutoring@siu.edu at least 24 hours in advance.
Can graduate students receive Academic Coaching?
Yes, we offer Academic Coaching to undergraduate and graduate students.
