Saluki Cares

A variety of student service professionals are involved in dealing with a number of student problems, such as deaths, extended illnesses, financial stress, adjustment issues, class attendance problems, homesickness, and stress in general.

When calls come in, a specific person is assigned to respond and then report back to the Saluki Cares committee.  This committee also has a small budget to help students with buying books if they cannot afford them.

"A comprehensive program of academic supports for students with learning disabilities and/or attention deficits at Southern Illinois University Carbondale"

Provides services such as notetakers, individual tutoring, and a computer lab, but only for those enrolled in the program, which costs money. Diagnostic fee is $1,250.00, and full-time support fee is $3,200.00 per semester.  Part-time support is $2,800.00 per semester.  Services are only available to those in the Achieve Program.

No charge for these services - part of standard SIU student services.  Students must have a previously diagnosed/documented disability such as learning disability or ADHD.  Can provide notetakers, test proctoring (taking tests in their location with fewer distractions, extended test time, tests in Braille or larger format, etc.).  Can provide adapted textbooks (audio, enlarged size, Braille).  Does not pay for tutoring.  Does not provide assessments.

Transitional Programs

The SIU office in charge of withdrawals from the University and absence notifications in case of serious illness/hospitalization.  They will inform all instructors if a student is going to be absent for more than a brief period.  Be aware that University policies regarding withdrawals have changed recently, that it is much harder to withdraw after the deadline date for when a student may withdraw on his/her own.  SIU used to give a lot of retroactive withdrawals: not any more.  Withdrawing can affect financial aid, housing contracts, and insurance.  Students should talk to their academic advisor and someone in Financial Aid before making a decision concerning withdrawing.

SIU Counseling Center

The mental health center for the campus.  Provides individual, couples and group counseling for students.  Has a Counselor on Duty (emergency counselor) available for same-day appointments and calls each weekday, 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.  The first visit is free of charge, and the next fifteen are $6.00 each.  The fee can be lowered if a student cannot afford it.  Your resource when a student is very upset or not functioning well academically, due to emotional concerns.  Services are confidential, so without a release signed by the student, no information is to be made known to others on campus.

The website (counselingcenter.siuc.edu) is varied in content, including survival resources like food banks, and information addressing a wide range of student concerns, and efforts are made regularly to maintain an with up-to-date listing of tutoring services offered by departments on campus.

Another source for counseling services on campus.  Staffed by trainees in Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Educational Psychology, Rehabilitation, etc.  Provides some assessments for learning disabilities or ADHD.  Typically involves a long wait.  Sliding fee scale.

Center for Academic Success

Admits students to SIUC who do not meet regular admissions standards.  Provides support services such as tutoring and mentoring.  These services are available for CAS students only.
